Enjoy an enchanting evening of choral music, storytelling and folk tradition at Chanson – Fables & Folksongs, performed by Chansons Chamber Choir in Perth. Taking place on Sunday 6 September 2026 at 7:00 p.m., this special concert brings together playful fables, expressive chansons and timeless folksongs in a programme filled with colour, character and imagination.
Based in Perth, Chansons is a chamber choir of around 40 singers drawn from across Perth & Kinross and Fife. Known for its rich, expressive sound and engaging performances, the choir will guide audiences through a musical journey inspired by stories, legends and songs from Britain and beyond.
At the heart of the programme is Bob Chilcott’s Aesop’s Fables, a witty and imaginative setting of four famous tales. Through lively rhythms, vivid harmonies and playful musical detail, these well-known stories are transformed into an entertaining choral experience for audiences of all ages. Familiar characters and timeless lessons are brought to life through the energy and personality of the choir.
The concert also features music by three living British composers, creating a programme that celebrates the continuing strength and creativity of contemporary choral music. Alongside the fables, audiences can enjoy folk-inspired works and beautifully shaped songs that reflect the traditions, landscapes and stories of different communities.
Expect an evening that moves effortlessly between lively humour and gentle reflection. Some pieces will invite you to smile, while others will create moments of stillness and atmosphere through the beauty of the voices. Together, the contrasting works create a concert that is both accessible and richly rewarding.
Whether you are a regular concertgoer, a lover of traditional music or simply looking for an enjoyable cultural experience in Perth, Fables & Folksongs offers something special. The familiar themes of storytelling, nature, humour and human experience make this music easy to connect with, while the quality of the choral writing provides plenty for experienced listeners to appreciate.
The performance takes place at St Ninian’s Cathedral, a memorable setting that adds atmosphere and resonance to the evening. The cathedral’s beautiful interior provides a fitting backdrop for music inspired by ancient tales, folk traditions and the imaginative world of fables.
