Unleash your child’s creativity at the Hands on Art family session, Make Your Own Still Life Painting, at Perth Art Gallery. Taking place on Sunday 6 September 2026, this fun and engaging workshop invites young artists to explore the world of still life through colour, shape, texture and imagination.
Still life paintings are pictures of everyday objects such as flowers, fruit and household items. During this lively session, children will discover how artists look closely at ordinary things and transform them into exciting works of art. Using a selection of colourful props, they will explore different arrangements, identify interesting shapes and textures, and learn how small details can inspire a painting.
Children will then have the opportunity to create their own still life artwork on paper. Instead of simply copying what they see, they will be encouraged to experiment with bold, unusual and imaginative colours. A brightly coloured apple, a purple flower or a blue jug—the choice is entirely theirs. This is an opportunity to have fun, think creatively and discover that art has no single right answer.
Designed especially for children aged 4 to 8 years, the session is relaxed, welcoming and suitable for all abilities. No previous painting experience is needed. The friendly gallery team will guide children throughout the activity, offering encouragement and simple ideas while allowing each young artist the freedom to develop their own style.
All materials will be provided, so families can arrive ready to create. Children can enjoy the excitement of working like real artists, while adults can share in the experience and encourage their budding creatives. The session is also a wonderful way to introduce children to the gallery environment and help them feel comfortable exploring art in a hands-on and enjoyable way.
Perth Art Gallery provides an inspiring setting for this family activity. After completing their paintings, families can spend more time discovering the gallery’s exhibitions and exploring the popular Hands on Art area. The session makes a perfect addition to a family day out in Perth, combining creativity, learning and plenty of fun.
Whether your child loves drawing, enjoys mixing colours or is simply curious to try something new, this workshop offers a fantastic chance to make, explore and express themselves. They will leave with a unique piece of artwork and the satisfaction of knowing they created something special from their own ideas.
